One woman is trying to navigate her relationship with her mother after she broke into her home while the woman and her husband were away.

In a post on Reddit, the woman explained that she left town for the holidays on Monday morning while her husband was at work. Before she left, she wrote a “very sweet special note” for her husband, leaving it “on the sofa where I know he will find it.”

“About 15 minutes before I got home from work I see on my Ring camera my mother in law walk into my house,” she wrote. “The door was locked. Which means she took the spare key and entered our house (we live on the same property, but different houses).”

She noted that her mother was inside the house for about 10 minutes, but since they don’t have cameras inside, “who knows what she was doing in there.”

“When my husband got home, he said there were Christmas presents on the kitchen table for him. And I asked him if they took the note I left him and he said he couldn’t find it… so I thought maybe the fan blew it on the floor and under the sofa,” she continued.

Her husband ended up joining her on the trip, so they were both out of town for the holidays, leaving their cat at home.

“We have a cat and her food and water are inside, but she goes potty outside the cat door,” explained the woman.

However, on Christmas Eve, her mother called and said she saw the cat in the window and “wanted to know if she could come into the house to get the cat out”.

Not sure why her mom “wanted her back in our house,” the poster said it wouldn’t be necessary, since the cat had food and a cat door to use the bathroom whenever needed.

“Well, when we got home yesterday, there was cat piss and s— everywhere because the door leading to the cat door was closed,” the woman wrote. “First, me [asked] my husband if he closed the door he said no why would I do that? We never close the door. So then I assumed that maybe I did it.”

“But then I started looking for the note I left him. I can’t find it anywhere. I looked in my trash can. I looked in our dumpster outside. I looked under the couch. I looked under the carpet. I looked everywhere like that until if our cat ate our letter, my mom stole it,” she continued.

The poster noted that if her mother is “malicious” enough to “steal a letter that was personal to my husband,” then she wouldn’t put it past her to close the door so their cat would be “stuck inside.”

The woman decided she needed to have a conversation with her mother-in-law about what happened, but also asked people on Reddit if she was overreacting.

People in the comments section insisted that her husband needs to set a boundary with his mother, while others suggested changing the locks.

“Get a keypad lock so you don’t have an extra key. Or change your locks and key location. I’d be furious,” one person wrote.

“Change the locks and let your husband have the conversation with her,” another person added.
