Immediately, in his first major interview after being elected Pope, Leo said that he was concerned about “some things that are being done in the States”. He added, “Sometimes decisions are made more based on economics than on human dignity and human support.”

And in October, he was more direct, saying, “Someone who says I’m against abortion but is in favor of the death penalty is not really pro-life. And someone who says I’m against abortion, but I agree with the inhumane treatment of immigrants in the United States, I don’t know if that’s pro-life.”

“I didn’t read the whole thing. I think, unfortunately, some parts of it that I saw make a huge change in what was for many, many years a true alliance between Europe and the United States. The remarks made about Europe, even in interviews recently, I think are trying to break what I think needs to be a very important alliance today and in the future.”

“So it is a program that President Trump and his advisers put together. He is the president of the United States, and he has the right to do this. It contains a number of things that I think that while maybe many people in the United States would agree, I think that many others see things in a different way.”

In response to the criticism, the White House told Newsweek, “President Trump has great relationships with many European leaders, but he never shies away from delivering hard truths. The devastating impacts of uncontrolled migration, and the inability of those migrants to assimilate, are not only a concern for President Trump, but for Europeans themselves, who have increasingly noted immigration as one of their biggest concerns.”
