Macy’s to close stores across 12 states in early 2026: Which locations are closing?

(NEXSTAR) – Macy’s has revealed the latest stores to close as part of its ongoing efforts to reallocate resources and strengthen the brand.

In a memo shared with employees on Thursday, Macy’s CEO Tony Spring provided an update on the company’s year-long “Bold New Chapter” plan, which seeks to prioritize investment in certain existing locations while closing underperforming stores, among other tactics.

“In executing our strategy, we continue to review our portfolio and make careful decisions about where and how to invest, including closing unproductive stores and streamlining operations,” Spring wrote. “These decisions are not taken lightly.”

A representative for Macy’s confirmed to Nexstar that the current round of closings will consist of 14 locations in 12 states:

California

Georgia

Maryland

Michigan

Minnesota

New Hampshire

New Jersey

New York

North Carolina

Pennsylvania

Texas

Washington

The 12 locations announced in the latest series of closings will close after the clearance sale, which is expected to begin in mid-January and last about 10 weeks, according to a Macy’s spokesperson.

“We have first communicated directly with Macy’s colleagues in affected locations and are supporting them throughout the transition, including transfer opportunities where available and severance and support where applicable,” a representative for Macy’s wrote in an emailed statement shared with Nexstar.

Macy’s, Inc. it had announced the first plans for its “Bold New Chapter” program in February 2024. As part of the strategy, the company announced that 150 of its underperforming stores would close by the end of 2026. At the time, Macy’s said it would instead begin “prioritizing investment in approximately 350 small-format expansion locations.”

Macy’s, Inc. operated approximately 480 of its stores with its name in February 2024. The number of stores is currently listed at 424 after an initial round of closures announced in early 2025.

Macy’s, meanwhile, is far from the only retailer with a shrinking brick-and-mortar presence. Major companies including Kroger, Foot Locker and Carter’s plan to close some locations in 2026. Some of the companies cited poor performance or financial difficulties exacerbated by the tariffs.
