Antony Albanese, the Australian Prime Minister, praised the heroes and the police who rushed to stop the gunmen and rescue the wounded.
He said: “The evil that was created in Bondi beach today is beyond comprehension and the trauma and loss that the families are dealing with tonight is beyond anyone’s worst nightmare”.
“We are also thinking that everyone will be treated for their injuries, and that many of them are alive right now because of the courage and quick action of the New South Wales Police and the first responders who rushed to help them, as well as the courage of everyday Australians who, without hesitation, put themselves in danger to keep their fellow Australians safe.
“We have seen Australians today running into danger to help others.”
