Dollar Tree is quietly making a change that customers have wanted for years

Dollar Tree has gone through many changes in recent years, including increasing prices above $1.00 and introducing new price levels. Some of these changes were not very popular with the store’s core audience of discount shoppers, who tend to hit the store looking for a bargain.

That’s why a recent Dollar Tree policy update is likely to make shoppers very happy. It provides a new opportunity for savvy shoppers to get items from The Dollar Tree at ultra-low prices that did not exist before.

Here’s why the policy change is such a big win for customers, who have waited years for the rule that is now finally in place.

News of Dollar Tree’s changed policy comes via an Instagram post from The Krazy Coupon Lady, a money-saving brand founded by two coupon shoppers who advise people on stacking coupons and sales to get rock-bottom deals.

In the Instagram Post, The Krazy Coupon Lady announced that “Dollar Tree just changed the game.”

“Starting this month, Dollar Tree is finally selling penny items to customers,” the post continued to explain. “For YEARS they refused, but thanks to a policy change, now they’re yours for $0.01 – if you can find them.”

Dollar Tree store employees appear to have confirmed this policy change, according to several Reddit threads.

“We have a message in the ops center and an email from our district manager with the new policy,” stated one poster.

More retail

“We are allowed to sell the items that were part of the fourth quarter clearance event. Now they have been marked down for a penny in the system. However, when a customer brings them to buy, we are supposed to go collect the rest if they left some on the shelf.”

Other posters have confirmed this, indicating that they have received the same message from the ops center in their own stores.

Penny items are typically items left over from clearance events. As the Instagram post explained, this currently includes items left over from the recent $0.25 clearance. Use the following three tricks to take advantage of this new ultra-low price.

  • Find items in the store that have been marked down to a penny. There are some lists online that can help.

  • Confirm the price of $0.01 using the scanner in the store.

  • Collect all the items you want before going to the checkout, because after you make the purchase, the store employees go to take the items.

This process means you must be aware of the new policy. The $0.01 items will not be advertised, and the prices will not appear on price tags in the store.

The good news is that the quiet deal can mean less competition for goods, as most customers may not be aware of the savings opportunity.

If you want to take advantage of the new bargain opportunity, you can check out items from the most recent clearance bins to see if they’re available for pennies at your local Dollar Tree.
