An iconic 83-year-old pizza chain has closed more than 100 restaurants

Selling Chicago-style pizza outside of Chicago has always been a challenge.

As someone who grew up near Boston, a city with a grand tradition of thin crust pizza offered by chains like Pizzeria Regina, Papa Gino’s, and Santarpio’s, deep dish pizza seemed like an entirely different food. It wasn’t something commonly sold during my childhood, and it remains something I never really considered pizza.

Despite this, Uno Pizzeria, which was known as Pizzeria Uno back in the 80’s and 90’s, flourished in New England. The chain offered a version of deep-dish pizza that was a take on the Chicago classic, but also closer to a traditional pizza.

It was a deep dish, but not as deep as what is traditionally sold under that name. You can eat it with a fork and knife, but you can also pick it up and eat it as a portion.

Uno hasn’t exactly taken over New England, but it has become a constant presence with dozens of locations around the region. That presence has slowly dwindled, as the overall chain has shrunk from more than 150 locations nationwide to just 36 as of Feb. 3, 2026, according to the locations page on the company’s website.

Now, the chain has suddenly closed three more Massachusetts locations.

Uno Pizzeria has closed locations in Dedham, Revere, and Braintree, Massachusetts, without any notification to customers, Boston’s WCVB reported.

The chain posted a notice on its Facebook page, which has since been taken down.

“After 34 years of serving this amazing community, our Revere location is closing its doors for the last time on Sunday,” the restaurant posted. “We would like to give a huge thank you to everyone who has made this restaurant feel like home for more than three decades. It has been an unforgettable run!”

More Restaurants

These closings leave just five Massachusetts locations listed on the chain’s website. Two locations are listed for New Hampshire, in Concord and Tilton. No Uno restaurants remain in Rhode Island.

Uno did not return a request for comment from the news station.

  • Significant reduction in total units: Uno has been shrinking over the past few years; closed more than a quarter of its American system in 2024, dropping from about 68 locations to about 53, and continued closures led to that lower count in 2025, Nation’s Restaurant News (NRN) reported.
