Last week, the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize María Corina Machado presented her medal to President Donald Trump during a meeting at the White House, saying it was “recognition of his commitment to the freedom of her country.”

President Trump has long wanted the Nobel Peace Prize, saying back in February 2025, “They will never give me a Nobel Peace Prize. Too bad. They deserve it, but they will never give it to me.” He also mentioned it in a recent letter to Jonas Støre, Prime Minister of Norway, where he said, “Your country has decided not to award me the Nobel Peace Prize for setting up 8 Wars PLUS.”

But, even though the president now has a Nobel Peace Prize medal in his hands, the Norwegian Nobel Committee notes that, “Regardless of what may happen to the medal… he is and remains the original winner who is recorded in history as the recipient of the prize. Even if the medal or diploma later comes into the possession of someone else, this does not change who was awarded the Nobel Prize.”

Many prizes have been sold or given away over the years, including James Watson’s 1962 Medical Prize (sold to fund research, though later returned to him), Leon Lederman’s 1988 Physics Prize (sold to cover medical bills), and Kofi Annan’s 2001 Peace Prize (donated to the United Nations Office in Geneva, where it is on display).

But the first (and only other recipient) of a talent medal was in 1943, and it was none other than: the Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany, Joseph Goebbels. According to the New York Times, Knut Hamsun, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920 who “often admired Hitler,” sent him.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee provided more details, noting that Hamsun “…met with Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. After returning to Norway, he sent his Nobel medal to Goebbels as a gesture of thanks for the meeting. Goebbels was honored with the gift. The current location of the medal is unknown.”
