Delta Air Lines permanently cancels route, offers refunds

While many airlines entered 2026 facing a number of financial challenges, the third largest airline in the US has been doing better than most.

In its last earnings call released in October 2025, Delta Air Lines beat analyst expectations with $15.2 billion in revenue and $1.71 in adjusted earnings per share compared to the $1.53 expected by the average analyst consensus.

With the next earnings report scheduled to be released on January 13, the projected outlook for the final quarter of the year is between $1.60 to $1.90 earnings per share, although the airline also expects a drop of $200 million in its profits due to the 43-day government shutdown in October and November.

As part of its efforts to shore up its unprofitable route network, Delta Air Lines has confirmed that it will no longer fly to Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM) in New York state along the Pennsylvania border.

With the larger Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) two hours away, BGM has undergone a $54 million renovation over the past two years but has struggled to keep airlines ready to run flights.

After low-cost carrier Avelo pulled out of the Binghamton market due to lack of profitability in 2024, Delta became the only carrier serving the area. The airline’s daily flight from Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) will operate for the last time on February 14. For now, BGA will exclusively serve general aviation such as flight training, air ambulances and agricultural flights as airport authorities remain in talks to try to bring in other commercial airlines.

“Decisions about air service involve many factors that are beyond the control of airports and local communities,” GBA Aviation Commissioner Mark Heefner said in a statement. “We are in active discussions with Delta and are working closely with our state, local and federal partners to re-establish passenger service as soon as possible. We also continue to have meetings with various airlines as we explore opportunities to expand air service in BGM. Our focus remains on providing reliable and accessible air travel options for the people and businesses of the region of Greater Binghamton.”

Heefner went on to say that travelers who booked tickets on the flight beyond February 14 will be contacted by Delta with options for refunds or rebooking on an alternate route. Travelers can also initiate the refund independently online through their flight booking.

United Airlines has not flown to BGA since 2016 while American Airlines left in 2017. With Binghamton being far enough from both New York and Syracuse to make a useful regional airport for the community, many locals continue to question its future as a commercial airport.

“This is tough, this is a very tough situation to be in,” Heefner said. “It’s not one we want to be in but I think there’s an opportunity. I think if somebody stays the course and looks down the road, in a year or so, I think there’s going to be better service overall.”
