Starmer’s Labor branded ‘austerity-lite’ and ‘rudderless’ in scathing attack on PM by Unite boss

Sir Keir Starmer’s Labor Party has been branded “austerity-lite” and “rudderless” in a scathing attack by the head of one of the UK’s biggest unions.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham has warned the government that a failure to prioritize workers in 2026 could lead to “sowing the seeds of its own destruction”.

She also criticized Labor for being too preoccupied with Sir Keir’s “failing leadership” and potential successors, rather than addressing the nation’s pressing issues.

Writing in The TimesMs Graham said: “For too long it has been everyday people, workers and communities who have paid the price for crisis after crisis of their own making. In 2026, this must stop.

“The government must decide what it represents and who it represents. If we want to ask, it is not working.

“The party faithful may lament his failed leadership and ‘night of the long knives’. But a new Labor leadership with the same policies just won’t cut it. The doom loop cannot be broken with more lite austerity, regardless of who is in Downing Street.

“Britain needs a vision. We led the first Industrial Revolution and we are nowhere in the fourth. Rudderless.”

Unite, notably the only affiliated union not to endorse the manifesto, has consistently challenged Labor on key policies.

In her opinion, Mrs. Graham emphasized the party’s opposition to the reduction of the winter fuel allowance and “the self-destruction of net zero targets that have arrived without the necessary investment in new industries”.

Also criticizing the government’s recent budget choices, she claimed that “the choice of stealth taxes on workers instead of a wealth tax on the mega-rich was the wrong choice”.

She stated: “Labour should stop being embarrassed to be the voice of the workers. The workers are fed up with carrying the can.”

Mrs. Graham attributed the poor productivity of the United Kingdom not to its workforce, but to “an investment strike in the United Kingdom plc”, she described as “a collective failure to invest in the industry, while maximizing returns for shareholders”.

At the end of her piece, she repeated her strong warning: “Next year Labor must deliver real growth, borrow to invest in Britain to create a sustainable future.

“In the coming year, if this government does not deviate from its current path, it will surely be sowing the seeds of its own destruction.”
